News: Expendables 3 Continues to Expand the Franchise's Roster of Action Stars

Lionsgate is reportedly negotiating with Jackie Chan, Milla Jovovich, Nicolas Cage and Wesley Snipes to join the cast of Sylvester Stallone's third Expendables film. Chan is easily the most accomplished action star of the bunch. Assuming he joins and Jet Li returns, this would be the second film featuring both popular martial artists (the other being 2008's The Forbidden Kingdom). The others are fitting but less obvious choices. Cage has recently chosen a number of questionable roles and is best received in dramas. Snipes--Stallone's Demolition Man co-star--would greatly benefit from a hit movie following his three years in prison. Aside from his tax evasion woes, his career was declining since the Blade trilogy ended in 2004. Jovovich is best known for The Fifth Element and the critically panned but financially successful Resident Evil films. Her presence would add a little diversity to the male-dominated cast.

Recent tweets by Stallone imply talks with Steven Seagal and the return of Mickey Rourke after skipping the second film. Other tweets have boasted that Expendables 3 will be better than excellent Indonesian action film The Raid: Redemption; an odd comparison considering the latter's martial arts focus and the fact that several of the Expendables are old enough to have parented The Raid's actors. Read more about the casting news here and Stallone's hinting tweets here.
