Review: I Will Make You Mine

Release date: March 14, 2020
Running time: 80 minutes
Starring:  Lynn Chen, Yea-Ming Chen, Goh Nakamura

Shot in beautiful black and white, 'I Will Make You Mine' ends the semi-sequel from the SURROGATE VALENTINE trilogy. This movie revisits characters from the previous movies shifting into a whole new stand-alone fresh feminine perspective. This story follows three main characters who all live totally different lives yet are all connected with a common bond, their flawed romantic relationship with singer-songwriter Goh Nakamura. Rachel (Chen) is now living rich and very comfortable lifestyle with her cheating husband, Professor Erika (Fujitani) dealing with the challenges of balancing parenthood with her professional career and with struggling musician Yea-Ming whom dream is slow fading away.

Already a fan of the writer and director, Lynn Chen, and quickly becoming a fan of producer Emily Ting, I was excited to check this film out. This was only heightened when I saw that the film was shot in black and white and accompanied by an astounding soundtrack. This excitement, coupled with a story with realistic romantic drama  and you have a story that gives you tons of eyebrow raising, side eye watching, and tea sipping emotions.

I don't know if I can emphasize enough how amazing this movie's soundtrack is. With Goh and Yea-Ming both having professional music careers, it was just magic waiting to happen. Their music is soulful and soothing along with providing a great deal of substance for the story. The movie uses music to both bring peace and tranquility while also promoting past memories of love, joy, and solstice.  It really is something that has to be heard to believe.

Watching this film I appreciated it for its entire body of work but was also equally able to appreciate it when focused solely on its musical and artistic characteristics.  Seeing scenes where Goh and Yea-Ming go through the creative process of song creation is as authentic as it comes and is equally beautiful.

With a movie filled with romantic drama, art, and passion, I Will Make You Mine will take its viewers on a journey through the various highs and lows of life. Having you root for your favorite character to find their happy ending, you also get to appreciate each character's journey through life. And by the way the closing credits are just perfect.

I Will Make You Mine is a beautiful blend of art and music with a bold style, great characters, and an authentic realism to its music that must be heard to believe!
