Madea's back — hallelujer! Tyler Perry returns with everyone's favorite character in TYLER PERRY’S A MADEA HOMECOMING, the newest film in the MADEA franchise set to debut on Netflix. Writer-director-producer Perry stars in the film that centers around Madea's great-grandson's college graduation, though the celebratory moment hits a halt as hidden secrets and family drama threaten to destroy the happy homecoming. The film features all-stars of the MADEA franchise, including Tamela Mann (Cora), David Mann (Mr. Brown), Cassi Davis Patton (Aunt Bam) as well as a guest appearance from iconic Irish actor Brendan O'Carroll, who matches Madea's comedic prowess as Agnes Brown.

Weekend Box Office: May 10-12, 2013

In its opening weekend, Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby nearly became his highest-grossing film domestically with a $51.1 million take, though that was still not enough to beat Iron Man 3's second weekend gross of an estimated $72.5 million. Iron Man 3's second weekend gross is the fourth-highest ever, only beaten by The Avengers, Avatar and The Dark Knight. The weekend's other major new release, Tyler Perry Presents Peeples, underperformed with a gross just under $5 million. Perry's name doesn't carry the same weight as a producer, and the stiff competition didn't help.

I initially attributed Gatsby's surprising success to 3D surcharges, but only 33 percent of its tickets came from those showings. The audience was primarily female and older (69 percent of the audience was over the age of 25), indicating that Warner Bros. recognized the desire for an alternative to this summer's first big action flick. I'm reminded of Sex and the City, which performed similarly well only a week after the opening of Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull back in May 2008.
