What to Watch This Quarantine: Kids Edition

As many of us are stuck indoors trying to balance work and newly home schooled children, an afternoon movie is often a needed break!  Here are some kid-focused options to keep you and your little ones entertained while we all quarantine and chill.

Angry Birds Movie 2 (Netflix)
The Angry Birds Movie 2 takes the unenviable task of following on to the unlikely movie based on the mobile game.  It is a fun adventure that is at times laugh out loud funny, but also a little too disjointed.  For more information, check out our review!

Born in China (Disney+)
Disney Nature movies are a great way to give you kids something fun and educational to watch.  Born in China ventures into the wilds of China to follow a panda and her growing club and a snow leopard and her two cubs.  

Frozen II (Disney+)
It's Frozen II.  You have already seen it multiple times and thanks to Disney+, you can now see it ALL THE TIME.  Frozen II has beautiful animation, catchy songs, and laugh out loud moments (for kids and adults) will make you appreciate a trip back to Arendelle.  For more information, check out our review!

Kung Fu Panda 2 (Netflix)
Now that Po is a kung fu master, he must learn to calm himself and find inner peace to defeat the newest foe.  Kung Fu Panda 2 returns all of your favorite characters and introduces a new threat for Po and the furious five to deal with.

Madagascar (HBO)
Help your kids get their wiggles out and move it move it with this Dreamworks animation classic.  It is a fun adventure with some very memorable characters that provides a fun animated escape. 

Monkey Kingdom (Disney+)
Give your kids an educational documentary, with this fun Disney nature look at monkeys!  This film follows a young monkey and his mother as they try to navigate the social hierarchy of the Temple Troop, a dynamic group of monkeys that live in ruins deep in Sri Lanka.

Sesame Street (HBO)
Now that everyone is learning from home, teach your kids some important lessons with the original television tutor.  Newer episodes have tried to tackle modern societal issues with new characters along with the cast of your favorite.

The story of a penguin that wants to surf is a surprisingly heartfelt film with an interesting, documentary style and great characters.  It also has some really beautiful animation and a novel world of penguin surfers.

Wonder Park (Amazon)
Wonder Park is an imaginative, enjoyable experience for all ages.  The movie has some memorable characters, an interesting setting, is an enjoyable ride that will not leave you disappointed.  For more information, check out our review!

At Redbox: Dora and the Lost City of Gold

The live action movie based on the very popular animated kids show was a surprisingly good film, with a funny cast, plenty of Dora easter eggs, and an exciting story that will entertain young and older viewers. 

Streaming (Disney+): Lady and the Tramp

Lady and the Tramp updates a Disney classic with a live action remake and is a worthy exclusive for Disney+.  It's a fun tale with plenty of cute animals, a nice balance of live action and CG, and a heartfelt story that will appeal to new and old viewers.  For more information, check out our review!

Streaming (Netflix): The Grinch

Get into the holiday spirit with Illumination's animated movie The Grinch.  This remake of the classic Dr Seuss tale adds some bright, beautiful animation and enough updates to keep story fresh.  

Review: Frozen 2

It's Frozen 2.  If you have kids, you're going to watch it.  You don't need me to tell you anything about this movie because you already bought your tickets for opening weekend.  But in any event, Frozen 2 follows our band of sisters and friends from the first movie as they are forced to journey outside of Arendelle due to a new threat.  The group will learn about Arendelle's past, which they will need to understand to help save Arendelle's future.  

The original movie was a surprise hit that had a wonderful combination of heartfelt story, catchy songs, strong female lead characters, and the right amount of magic to capture audiences.  Frozen 2 tries to recapture this combination, and at times it is successful.  The movie starts off slowly, with an overdose of songs and some strangely off animation.  However, once the group gets past the first act, the movie really picks up.  The animation becomes more beautiful, with some really spectacular weather and elemental effects, and as always, pretty amazing snow and ice.  The songs also become more spaced out and meaningful.  

The story of Frozen 2 is decidedly darker and more grown up than the first film.  Similar to how Harry Potter became more mature as the series progressed, Frozen 2 seems to be trying to appeal to the audiences that loved the original but are now 6 years older.  However, don't worry, there is still plenty of silly humor and ridiculousness to appeal to the younger viewers.  However, a pleasant surprise was that--similar to what Pixar has mastered--many of the jokes of Frozen 2 have a double meaning to appeal to the adults in the theater.  There were plenty of times that the entire theater, adults included, laughed out loud.  And there is one song that has a fantastic, eighties inspired presentation that had the older folks enthralled.  

However, despite all this positive, Frozen 2 is not a perfect film.  The songs are entertaining, but don't have the same instant appeal as the first movie's soundtrack.  I'm sure they will grow on me (and I'm also quite sure I will be listening to the soundtrack over and over again for the next couple of years), but it seemed like they were less catchy and had more exposition to move along scenes.  Some had awkward phrasing or forced statements that didn't seem natural like the soundtrack of the original.  And the story, despite being pretty complicated with a bunch of new information that doesn't really fit with the previous movie, also wraps up extra quickly (likely to keep the movie at under two hours).  But, again, it's Frozen 2 and you know you're going to see it.  There is plenty to like and keep you entertained for the entire film, and it lets us revisit the beloved characters from this world.

What to Watch This Weekend: March 21, 2014

In Theaters: Bad Words

We recommend renting this film, but if you really want to see something in theaters, you will probably enjoy Bad Words. It could have done more with its absurd premise, but it is a funny showcase for an against-type Jason Bateman.

On DVD: Frozen

Disney's Academy Award-winning film is now available to rent. It won best animated feature and best song. It's a good movie with beautiful animation and great music. It's not perfect, but it's a fun movie for the whole family with plenty of cool moments.

Streaming (Netflix): 20 Feet from Stardom

20 Feet from Stardom is an interesting look at the many trials and occasional triumphs experienced by performers who receive far too little recognition. It's a great documentary and shouldn't be missed now that it's available for streaming.

Mud features a strong performance by Matthew McConaughey as the title character who meets two boys in the back woods of a southern town. The film offers an engaging Southern drama that manages to keep an interesting story along some beautiful Southern landscapes.

What to Watch This Weekend: December 6, 2013

Nothing really coming out in theaters so why not check out a great movie that came out last week? If you want to stay in (and we don't blame you with the weather turning cold), there are some great DVD rental and Netflix streaming options.

In Theaters: Frozen

Disney's latest animated movie is a surprisingly fun film with a great cast, fun story, and a return of singing to the animated film genre. Additionally the animation is gorgeous and maybe all the snow will put you into the holiday mood (or forget about the possible wintry mix we're having on Sunday).

On DVD: Drinking Buddies

Drinking Buddies is probably not going to be a great movie (although it's 82% RT rating makes me hopeful) but it is definitely the movie I am going to see. It looks like a fairly predictable comedy with a funny cast and a drinking / dating premise.  What's not to like?

Streaming (Netflix): The Iceman

Alright, David didn't like this movie because he thought it veered away too far from the book and turned the main character into a sociopath rather than a callous family man. But, a lot of OTHER people did like it (RT 67%) so maybe you'll see something you like. One thing that is easy to appreciate is Michael Shannon's performance as the Iceman killer.

Streaming (Netflix): Crystal Fairy & The Magical Cactus

Crystal Fairy is an interesting movie. Although it didn't get great reviews, some people definitely liked the off beat style of the film and what better way to find out if you like it than by seeing it for free at home!

Review: Frozen

Frozen is a new animated movie from Walt Disney studios. It tells the tale of Elsa (Menzel), a princess with a unique power over ice. She loses control of her abilities and has to flee her village, forcing her sister (Bell) to embark on a quest to convince her to return. The story of Frozen is adequate, and does a good enough job of moving along the movie. It actually has a nice Icelandic feel to it, with some interesting language and imagery that is fun to experience. Since this is an animated movie, I'll let you know that the animation is gorgeous. It's not overly impressive at the start (though it has a really good opening scene involving a lot of ice), but once it gets into the winter scenes it's a thing of beauty. The snow particles are absolutely stunning and the ice is beautiful and accompanied by some really spectacular lighting effects. 

One of the most interesting (and surprisingly good) aspects of the movie is the music, particularly the songs. I had forgotten how the classic Disney animated movies had incorporated songs into their story and I also hadn't noticed how most animated movies these days don't have them. It was refreshing to see singing prominently featured in an animated film and done so well. Sure, some of the songs are a little cheesy, but so are many of the old Disney songs. And they're catchy, I found myself humming them the day after I saw the film. Probably because of Idina Menzel's pedigree, some of the songs have a cheesy Broadway feel. The rest of the cast is good, with Josh Gad being particularly enjoyable as Olaf, one of Elsa's sister's companions on her journey. I came into Frozen with fairly low expectations but was pleasantly surprised by the movie. It was very entertaining with a lot of wonderful aspects. The only negative is a pretty terrible plot twist towards the end of the film, and blemishing what would have been an almost perfect movie. But luckily, there is plenty of cool aspects to Frozen.
