What to Watch This Weekend: Bonus Quarantine Movies

Here's a special helping of quarantine-themed streaming only movies to watch if you decide to stay at home during due to coronavirus concerns. Also, check out this link for three additional streaming movie options we recommended this weekend.

Streaming (Hulu): Contagion

Steven Soderbergh's disaster drama features a tense story and an all star cast that work to battle an airborne illness before it is too late!

Streaming (Netflix): Outbreak

This 1995 classic movie is about a virus that grips a small town and the efforts of a few stars to stop its spread. It is not a great movie, but it is the first disaster drama I remember seeing so it holds a special place in my heart.

Streaming (Amazon): Pandemic

Pandemic--a relatively recent disaster drama--is set in the near future, where a virus of epic proportions has overtaken the planet. Humanity is seemingly losing the fight for survival and hopes to find a cure as the infected outnumber the uninfected!

Streaming (Showtime): Five Feet Apart

A standard teen romantic dramady with the added complication that the couple must stay five feet apart due to illness. Should have some relevance to our current situation as that is about the distance we are told to keep for coronavirus.

Streaming (Netflix): Her
Because many of us will only interact with Siri / Alexa this weekend, Her seems particularly relevant. Her deals with a lonely man who forms a relationship with an AI personality. It is an odd premise, but one that Joaquin Phoenix carries to perfection in this near future film. For more information, check out our review here!

Based on Kumail Nanjiani's actual life, the Big Sick is a heartfelt romantic dramady that blends cultures and life problems to create a new take on the romantic movie.

What to Watch This Weekend: June 13, 2014

In Theaters: Obvious Child
It technically opened last week but it's getting a wider release this week. It's an indie gem that has an equal blend of heart and funny.

From Redbox: Her
Possibly my favorite movie from last year. Just see it, it's an amazing film.

Streaming (Netflix): Omar
In our indie themed What 2 Watch, we have another well received indie film (91% on Rotten Tomatoes) about a young couple who live on opposite sides of an Israeli boundary wall in Palestine.

Streaming (Netflix, Amazon): Cabin in the Woods
It's Friday the 13th, so why not watch one of the better horror movies to come out recently! Cabin in the Woods was surprisingly good so check it out if you're hoping for a scare.

Review: her

Who to see it with: Someone looking for an original, genuine, and off-beat romantic movie.

her is a fresh, interesting romantic movie. After watching the trailer, I had an inclination that I would love it. After experiencing this complex look into both traditional and more abstract relationships twice, I can honestly say I loved this film. Spike Jonze's film is set in a believable near future where Theodore (Phoenix), a lonely writer, develops a relationship with an artificial intelligence. This seemingly preposterous setting acts as a launching pad for a deep look into both traditional and unconventional relationships in an increasingly connected and tech dependent society.

What stands out about this film is the brilliant performance of Joaquin Phoenix. By being the only on screen presence for the majority of the movie, he is asked to carry much of the film and does so amazingly. His conversations with "Samantha," the AI (Johansson) have a very real quality to them, from an initial hesitance born of the new situation and inherent awkwardness, to a more comfortable honeymoon stage in a relationship, you are easily drawn into these two characters and want to believe that their romance can succeed. Part of the credit also goes to Johansson for delivering a great performance that is both realistic but also pleasantly confined to the limitations of what a artificial intelligence might be able to know.

Additionally, Spike Jonze's cinematography is absolutely stunning, with some beautiful shots lit to perfection. He has an amazing eye for film and the beauty of the "paradise" world is perfectly contrasted with how lonely a large portion of the population are. It's such an interesting premise and is realized perfectly. Everything about this unbelievable story is believable. The technology, the fashion, and the mannerisms of the populace all feel like something that we could have in a couple decades. In the end, what Spike Jonze has managed to accomplish is create a genuine, believable movie about a wholly unbelievable situation.
