What to Watch This Weekend: September 13, 2019

In Theaters: Hustlers
Hustlers is definitely the biggest release out this weekend, and it is an entertaining movie from start to finish.  Our review called it "a female wolf of wall street, with a decent amount of craziness, high risk scams, and strong personalities."

At Redbox: Booksmart
One of my favorite movies of the year and a refreshing take on the coming of age drama is finally available for rental.   Our review called Booksmart “a smart, sharp, hilarious comedy and the new valedictorian of the high school coming of age class.”

Streaming (HBO): Mary Queen of Scots
Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie's historical drama is a slow burn, but what a fantastic journey it provides.  It is filled with interesting characters, political intrigue, and breakout performances by both leading ladies.

Streaming (Amazon): Late Night
Emma Thompson and Mindy Kaling's talk show comedy is one of the year's most overlooked independent films and is now available to stream at home.  If you didn't see it in theaters (and frankly, not many people did), then make sure to check it out from the comfort of your home!

What to Watch This Weekend: July 26, 2019

In Theaters: The Farewell
I am going to preface this by saying I haven't seen The Farewell, but the trailer looks fantastic and it has a ridiculously good Rotten Tomatoes score.   It is having a wider release this weekend (including expanded showings in the DMV) so if it has hit theaters in your area check it out.  I know I am!

In Theaters: Booksmart
Booksmart is one of my favorite movies of the year, and it's returning to theaters with $5 tickets starting Saturday.  Our review called Booksmart “a smart, sharp, hilarious comedy and the new valedictorian of the high school coming of age class.”  If you missed the film or just want to rewatch it on the big screen for a great price, check your local theaters to see if they have it.

Streaming (HBO): First Man
Celebrate the Apollo 11 landing (well that was last weekend but it's close enough) by checking out the biopic about the first man to walk on the moon.  The effects were amazing and the story was compelling, but I couldn't get over Gosling's portrayal of Neil Armstrong.  It was probably true to form, but he just didn't seem like a very interesting character with a shoehorned emotional hook to get you to care more.  However, it is definitely worth checking out if you have HBO.

Streaming (Netflix): Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse
One of the best films of 2018 and the Oscar winner for best animated film, Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse is a beautifully animated film that manages to capture a comic style in CG.  It has fantastic animation, an interesting story, and introduces us to the multiverse and a compelling new Spider-Man.  Don't miss this one if you haven't seen it.  If you have, watch it again!

Review: Booksmart

Release date: May 24, 2019
Running time: 102 minutes
Starring: Kaitlyn Dever, Beanie Feldstein, Jessica Williams

Booksmart is a new comedy from director Olivia Wilde.  It tells the story of two high school try hards who--after spending all of high school studying and playing by the book--realize that they have one night left to have fun before both graduation and their lives diverge.  If this sounds like a familiar story, it is but don't let that fool you.  Booksmart is an original, brilliant coming of age comedy that takes this tried and true trope and puts a modern spin on it.

The first things you will notice about Booksmart are the two leads.  Dever and Feldstein have natural chemistry and their comedic styles and personalities play off each other perfectly.  This is helped by some seriously sharp and funny writing.  The comedy is based in both their friendship and a lot of the standard growing up / high school / pressure to succeed themes.  The main friends are relate-able, especially for those of us that had a similarly boring high school experience (without the epic, fun night of debauchery before graduation).  And the other high school stereotypes are perfectly exaggerated versions of your typical high school cliques: drama nerds, jocks, popular kids, and rich kids to name a few.  Their interactions are laugh out loud funny and a perfect hyperbolized encapsulation of the high school experience.

Accompanying the fantastic writing and characters is some wonderful music.  Although it doesn't overtly catch your attention, it is a perfect accompaniment to the overall caper.  It is exactly the type of soundtrack you would want: one that hits all the right notes but doesn't overpower the comedy and relationships.  The story, despite feeling like your typical coming of age high school nerd story, has plenty of twists, turns, and funny moments.  It will keep you guessing what happens next as you root for Dever and Feldstein to make it to their destination.

Booksmart is a smart, sharp, hilarious comedy and the new valedictorian of the high school coming of age class.
