What to Watch This Weekend: February 21, 2020

In Theaters: Parasite (IMAX)
Parasite comes back to IMAX for a one week special engagement.  If you haven't seen the Best Picture winner or haven't experienced it in IMAX, make sure to check it out.  Parasite is like having two films in one, and the combination of the two results in a suspenseful, methodical story that has some interesting characters and plenty of surprises.  For more information, check out our review!

At Redbox: Jojo Rabbit
Jojo Rabbit is a ridiculous, irreverent, lighthearted film that tackles some difficult issues with humor and a childlike innocence.  It is a film that is so unique and entertaining that it has to be seen to be believed.  For more information, check out our review!

At Redbox: A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood shows that the ideas of kindness, friendship, and understanding are just as relevant now as they have ever been.  Tom Hanks's perfect portrayal of Mister Rogers is a treat to watch and will help the iconic man touch a new generation of people.  For more information, check out our review!

Streaming (Amazon): The Farewell
Check out the amazing movie that was snubbed by the Oscars.  It is 98% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and is a heartwarming and heart wrenching look at a family dealing with very terrible news.  It explores differences in cultures and generations and has some wonderful acting.

Streaming (HBO): Ma
Octavia Spencer as a deranged, emotionally manipulative mother?  Yes please.  Spencer is the highlight and main draw of this film, as she plays an older woman whose house becomes a popular high school hang out.  However, as her popularity grows, her nice persona begins to crack as her motivations become clear.

Streaming (HBO): First Man
The biopic about the first man to walk on the moon is leaving HBO at the end of this month.  The effects were amazing and the story was compelling, but I couldn't get over Gosling's portrayal of Neil Armstrong.  It was probably true to form, but he just didn't seem like a very interesting character with a shoehorned emotional hook to get you to care more.  However, it is definitely worth checking out if you have HBO.

What to Watch This Weekend: July 26, 2019

In Theaters: The Farewell
I am going to preface this by saying I haven't seen The Farewell, but the trailer looks fantastic and it has a ridiculously good Rotten Tomatoes score.   It is having a wider release this weekend (including expanded showings in the DMV) so if it has hit theaters in your area check it out.  I know I am!

In Theaters: Booksmart
Booksmart is one of my favorite movies of the year, and it's returning to theaters with $5 tickets starting Saturday.  Our review called Booksmart “a smart, sharp, hilarious comedy and the new valedictorian of the high school coming of age class.”  If you missed the film or just want to rewatch it on the big screen for a great price, check your local theaters to see if they have it.

Streaming (HBO): First Man
Celebrate the Apollo 11 landing (well that was last weekend but it's close enough) by checking out the biopic about the first man to walk on the moon.

Streaming (Netflix): Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse
One of the best films of 2018 and the Oscar winner for best animated film, Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse is a beautifully animated film that manages to capture a comic style in CG.  It has fantastic animation, an interesting story, and introduces us to the multiverse and a compelling new Spider-Man.  Don't miss this one if you haven't seen it.  If you have, watch it again!

Screening: FIRST MAN | w/ Talent Q&A Opportunity

Image result for FIRST MAN MOVIE

The screening will take place at the National Air and Space Museum, and will have a Q&A following with Academy-Award winner Josh Singer and two-time Pulitzer-Prize nominee, and author of the Armstrong biography First Man, James Hansen.

James and Josh, who adapted the book into the movie’s screenplay, will examine the relationship between writing about history and using history as inspiration for entertainment. Don’t miss this chance to hear them discuss some of the most provocative incidents from the film. Audience participation will be encouraged during a time for questions. Hansen and Singer will sign their First Man books after the program.
