What to Watch This Quarantine: Foreign Movies

As many of us are stuck indoors for extended periods of time, the only options for entertainment are streaming.  Now that we have been quarantined for a very extended period, you might be running out of your normal movies to watch. Luckily, we have you covered with some foreign films that might provide you new perspectives and let you visit places and see cultures you wouldn't normally see.   

El Amor Menos Pensado (HBO) - Mature Intelligent Romantic Comedy
This highly rated Latin comedy received praise for its mature writing, funny subject matter, and intelligent observations on life and romance.

Furie (Netflix) - Martial Arts Action
An intense martial arts action movie about a mother trying to track down her kidnapped child before it is too late, this one had heart, suspense, and most importantly, very good martial arts fighting.

Gully Boy (Amazon) - Uplifting Hip Hop Drama
Gully Boy is an absolute treat, a film about underground Indian hip hop that has good messages, charming characters, and a ton of great hip hop.  This one is one of my favorite foreign films I have seen in recent memory. 

Parasite (Hulu) - Intense Psychological Thriller

Photograph (Amazon) - Touching Romantic Drama

From the director of The Lunchbox--one of my favorite foreign films in recent memory--comes another unlikely romantic tale.  In it, a struggling street photographer convinces a shy stranger to pose as his fiancee during a family visit, which leads to more than either of the pair expected.

Portrait of a Lady on Fire (Hulu) - Understated Romantic Drama

Portrait of a Lady on Fire is an understated masterpiece, with wonderful acting, superb sounds throughout, and a story that will paint a wonderful movie picture for you.  For more information, check out our review!

Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan (Amazon) - Fun Bollywood RomCom
Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan is both an important milestone for Bollywood and an enjoyable Rom-Com with great performances, laugh out loud moments, and a strong message that should not be missed.  For more information, check out our review!

Street Dancer 3 (Amazon) - Fun Dancing Action

The Art of Self Defense had some definitely quirky acting and characters, but was a thoroughly enjoyable dark comedy about an unconfident man finding his own inner strength and dark side through a unforgiving martial arts teacher.

What Men Want is a gender swapped remake of the 90s film headlined by the wonderful Taraji P. Henson.  If you want some laughs this weekend, this is a solid choice.

Streaming (Netflix): Molly's Game

The dramatic thriller based on the true story of a woman who started a high stakes poker game, Molly's Game is fueled by the craziness of the story and the fantastic performances of Jessica Chastain and Idris Elba.

Streaming (STARZ): Zombieland: Double Tap

Streaming (Amazon): The Farewell

Check out the amazing movie that was snubbed by the Oscars.  It is 98% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and is a heartwarming and heart wrenching look at a family dealing with very terrible news.  It explores differences in cultures and generations and has some wonderful acting.

Streaming (HBO): Ma

Octavia Spencer as a deranged, emotionally manipulative mother?  Yes please.  Spencer is the highlight and main draw of this film, as she plays an older woman whose house becomes a popular high school hang out.  However, as her popularity grows, her nice persona begins to crack as her motivations become clear.

Streaming (HBO): First Man
The biopic about the first man to walk on the moon is leaving HBO at the end of this month.  The effects were amazing and the story was compelling, but I couldn't get over Gosling's portrayal of Neil Armstrong.  It was probably true to form, but he just didn't seem like a very interesting character with a shoehorned emotional hook to get you to care more.  However, it is definitely worth checking out if you have HBO.

We wanted to put some Halloween-themed movies in this list, and there’s nothing better than the classic comedy zombie movie, Shaun of the Dead.  One of Simon Pegg’s earlier roles has him dealing with a zombie outbreak in his small UK town in a hilarious and gory adventure.

Streaming (Vudu Free With Ads): Maggie
Abigail Breslin is currently starring in a fantastic zombie sequel, but an earlier role has her pair with Arnold Schwarzenegger as an infected girl whose father is doing everything he can to help her survive and not turn.

Review: Parasite

Parasite is an odd title to categorize.  It starts off as a hustle movie, where the Kim family takes advantage of the wealthy, trusting Park family.  However, part way through it turns into a more suspenseful film as the scam starts to unravel and new issues arise with the situation.  

To call this film different would be an understatement; it doesn't do anything particularly amazing but it tells an interesting  story that deals with class inequality, the extreme lengths some will go to survive, and some very suspenseful situations.  The film doesn't have many characters, but the ones that are there are perfectly cast and acted; with the hustler family coming off as capable and conniving and the wealthy family coming off as out of touch and in over their heads.  You want to root for the hustlers as they are just trying to survive, but you also feel sympathy for the wealthy family as they are being taken advantage of.  

The story is slowly paced but I appreciated that about this film.  The build up is steady, but when the film switches from a scam to suspense, the pace of the film increases dramatically.  Most of the film is set in either families' domiciles, and the sets are used perfectly.  The differences between the living situations of the Kims and the Parks are pretty dramatic, and the first time you see the Park manor, it genuinely takes your breath away.  The film also makes excellent use of light to both highlight these differences and build the suspense when it takes its turn.  This movie really is something that has to be experienced as it is tough to describe!
